Jane, Investment Banking Associate turned Start-up COO, New York
Case Study
I was tired, stressed, overwhelmed, and completely unsure of what I wanted to do next professionally. I found it really hard to make any decisions because of the mental and physical burnout I was experiencing in my investment banking role. I was afraid of making the wrong choice and I felt there was not enough time to look for a new job or develop the skills I thought I needed to pivot. I was worried about being an imposition if I asked people for time to chat in a networking capacity. I was very burned out and craving more time to develop my personal life and work on my health and fitness.

CAREER: Gain clarity on the career path that makes sense next and cultivate mentors/a network to support that direction. Restructure my career to work on something energizing with work-life balance (leadership I enjoy, balanced culture)
PERSONAL LIFE: Create and stick to routines including home-cooked meals 2-3 times a week, gym 4 times a week, and ownership over my day.
Anne's program gave me the structure, guidance and accountability that I needed to find a path forward. The personal growth I experienced was immense - she helped me rebuild my confidence and start trusting myself (maybe for the first time) which allowed me to quit my job in Investment Banking without having another job lined up - something I never thought I would have the courage to do.
We did a lot of work on tuning into honoring my feelings. Right after I quit my job I was in Croatia sitting on the dock outside of our Airbnb reading a book and I was overwhelmed with literal bliss and gratitude...I realized I had forgotten what that felt like and that this is what happens when you don't ignore negative feelings, when you don't let other people's opinion of what you should do with your career / life rule over you.
We took the time to think about my interests, strengths, and what I liked and didn’t like about my career in banking which helped me develop the clarity I needed to make my next step. And we did a ton of work on networking which historically had been a very uncomfortable activity for me.
I was really concerned that I only had banking / finance connections and that wouldn't help me with my next step but so many of them were able to connect me with friends that are in the space I am interested in. I met with an old mentor that has only worked at one bank her entire career, I didn't anticipate that she would have any connections for me but she ended up introducing me to someone that gave me some of the most valuable insight on the start-up world I had received. Leaving that coffee chat I remember thinking this is why it is so important to put what you want out there even if you don't think there is opportunity there.
MY CAREER: I feel clear on where I’m going in my career. I have a North Star that reflects my values and priorities and secured a consulting role with the Founder/CEO of a tech portfolio startup, overseeing the incubation of a brand new product.

MY PERSONAL LIFE: I took back control over my time - even before I quit, I was setting more boundaries. I am now so much more well-rested and comfortable with taking the time to recover. I regularly cook for myself and exercise. I am so much more present with family and friends - so many have noticed a shift in my demeanor.
HOW I THINK & FEEL: I am able to work through feelings. I am still on a journey to trusting myself but there has been a big improvement. I believe good things happen to me, that I don’t need to take any job someone will give me, that I make good choices, and the universe is looking out for me.

MY NETWORK: Networking now feels natural and authentic - I network even when I am not even intentionally trying to network!
